How Students Learn
The short version of a century of research, aimed at what you'll do this week.
Most students were never taught how to study. They were taught content and left to invent a method, and the method almost everyone invents — reread the notes, highlight the important bits, do it again the night before — is close to the least effective option available.
This page is the corrective, kept as short as the evidence allows.
Memory, Briefly
Learning is a change in long-term memory. Three ideas explain most of what follows:
Working memory is tiny. You can hold a handful of new items at once. Overload it and nothing gets through — which is why a lesson that presents six new concepts simultaneously teaches none of them.
Forgetting is the default. Information decays unless something intervenes. This is not a defect; it's how a finite system stays useful.
Retrieval strengthens memory more than exposure does. Pulling something out of memory does more for retention than putting it in again. This single finding overturns the way most people study.
What Actually Works
Retrieval Practice (Active Recall)
Close the book and try to reproduce the material from memory. Flashcards, past papers, blank-page recall, explaining it aloud — the format matters far less than the act of retrieving.

Spaced Repetition
Spread study over time rather than massing it. Four thirty-minute sessions across two weeks beat one two-hour session, substantially, for the same total time.
Cramming works — for about 48 hours. If the goal is to still know it at the end of the year, spacing is not optional.
Interleaving
Mix problem types within a session instead of doing twenty of one kind then twenty of another. Blocked practice feels smoother and produces worse retention, because it lets you apply a method without first deciding which method applies — and deciding is the skill being tested.
Elaboration
Ask why. Connect new material to what you already know, explain it in your own words, generate your own examples. Elaborated material has more retrieval routes into it.
Dual Coding
Pair words with visuals — diagrams, timelines, sketched processes. Verbal and visual information are processed through partly separate channels, so combining them adds capacity rather than splitting it.
Concrete Examples
Abstract principles are hard to hold and hard to transfer. Multiple concrete examples of the same principle let a learner extract what they share, which is what transfer actually requires.
What Doesn't (Or Doesn't Much)
Rereading and highlighting. Nearly universal, close to useless on its own. Both produce fluency — the material feels familiar — which is mistaken for knowledge.
Matching instruction to "learning styles". The idea that visual learners learn better from visuals is intuitive and has repeatedly failed controlled testing. Learners do have preferences; teaching to them doesn't improve outcomes. Studying "more". Hours are a poor proxy. A focused hour of retrieval practice beats three hours of rereading, and the three hours feel more virtuous.
The Conditions Underneath
Technique sits on top of biology, and the biology is not optional:
- Sleep consolidates memory. A night's sleep after studying does measurable work; losing it to study longer is usually a net loss.
- Exercise improves attention and memory, with effects visible within a single session.
- Attention must be protected. The phone in the room measurably costs performance even face-down and silent.
- Stress at moderate levels aids performance and at high levels destroys working memory.
For Teachers
The same findings, applied to a class:
- Start each lesson with a low-stakes retrieval quiz on last week's material — spacing and retrieval in five minutes.
- Break new content into small pieces with checks between them, so working memory isn't overrun.
- Mix problem types in homework rather than blocking them by topic.
- Make thinking visible: ask for explanations, not just answers.
- Assess frequently and cheaply. Testing is a learning tool, not only a measurement one.
