Classroom Technology Guide
Choosing tools that earn their setup cost — and recognizing the ones that don't.
Technology in a classroom is neither the transformation its vendors promise nor the distraction its critics describe. It's a set of tools, some of which solve real problems very well and most of which solve problems you don't have.
The question is never "should we use technology?" It's "what is this specific tool doing that the alternative doesn't, and is that worth the friction?"
The Categories
Practice and drill platforms — adaptive question banks that adjust difficulty to the learner. The strongest evidence base of any category, because they operationalize retrieval practice and spacing automatically. Best for procedural fluency; poor for conceptual understanding.
Content and instruction — video lessons, interactive explainers. Genuinely useful for revisiting material at your own pace and for reaching students who missed a lesson. Weak as a replacement for teaching, because passive viewing produces the same fluency illusion as rereading.
Assessment and feedback — quiz tools, exit tickets, automated marking. High value per minute of setup: cheap frequent assessment is itself a learning intervention, not just measurement.
Organization and workflow — learning management systems, shared documents, calendars. Invisible when working; a substantial drag when badly chosen.
Creation tools — writing, video, audio, design. Where technology most clearly does something no analog alternative does. Also where the learning is most visible.
Collaboration — shared documents, discussion boards, group workspaces. Works when the task genuinely requires several people. Adds overhead when it doesn't.

Evaluating a Tool Before You Commit
A short checklist, applied before a class ever sees it:
- What specific problem does this solve? If the answer is "engagement" or "21st-century skills", stop. Those are outcomes, not problems.
- What's the alternative? Compare against the analog version honestly. Sometimes paper wins.
- How long to set up, per class and per student? Setup cost is paid every term, by you.
- What happens when it breaks? It will. If a lesson has no non-technical fallback, the lesson is fragile.
- What does it do with student data? See below.
- What's the cost after the free tier? Free educational tiers change. Assume the one you're using will.
- Can students access it at home? A tool requiring hardware or bandwidth some students don't have widens a gap rather than closing one.
The Privacy Questions
Schools hand over student data casually and at scale, and students can't meaningfully consent. Before adopting anything:
- What personal data is collected, and is it more than the tool needs to function?
- Where is it stored, under whose jurisdiction, and for how long?
- Is it sold, shared, or used to train models?
- Can a student's data be exported and deleted on request?
- Does your institution have an approvals process? Use it — it exists for this.
Prefer tools that work without student accounts where the pedagogy allows. The lowest-risk data is the data never collected.
Teaching Digital Literacy Alongside
Students are fluent with devices and frequently poor at evaluating what's on them. Fluency is not literacy.
The parts worth teaching explicitly: judging a source's reliability, recognizing manipulated or synthetic media, understanding how recommendation systems shape what they see, managing a digital footprint, and behaving decently online.

Where Technology Reliably Fails
- When it replaces thinking rather than supporting it. A tool that produces the answer removes the work that was the point.
- When novelty is mistaken for learning. The first lesson with a new tool always goes well. Check the fourth.
- When it fragments attention. A device that is also a games console and a social network is a hard place to concentrate.
- When it's adopted top-down without teacher buy-in. Tools chosen by people who won't use them have a predictable adoption curve.
- When it widens access gaps. Assume unequal hardware, bandwidth, and home support unless you know otherwise.
Making It Work
- Start with one tool, one class, one term. Evaluate honestly before expanding.
- Teach the tool once, properly. Ten minutes of explicit instruction saves a term of confusion.
- Have a paper fallback for anything that matters.
- Ask the students. They'll tell you which tools are genuinely useful and which are busywork, and they're usually right.
